Wine & Tomatoes

While we were talking about cheap wines, Lynda asked about which wines are best with tomatoes. I suggested that she try a wine with enough acidity and tangy fruit flavors to match the tomatoes, such as the white wine pinot grigio or reds like barbera and barbaresco, all traditional Italian vino, though they're also made in other regions these days.

If you think about famous tomato dishes, many are Italian, so it makes sense that Italian wines might have some of the same flavor elements (unless you think regional pairing is bunk).

I'd add to this that when we cook tomatoes, they soften their acidic edge and become sweeter. So the wines we pair with them can soften too. Try barbera, valpolicella or even pinot noir from cool climates.

Which wines do you like to drink with tomatoes?
