We've heard about lots of studies that indicate that wine consumption is rising in the U.S. Now, a new study reveals that by the end of 2007, Americans will consume more wine than Italians for the first time ever, and will rank second only to France in overall wine consumption. This year, Americans will drink 304 million cases (3.6 billion bottles) ...

... according to The U.S. Wine Market report, and will surpass France before 2015. I think that's great news for all wine consumers. A bigger market with greater demand will encourage more choice and competition among value brands. (Right now, there are more than 7,000 wine brands sold in the country.)

Granted, there'll also be increased demand for premium bottles, which will continue to rise in price since many are limited in production. However, given the sensory pleasures and health benefits of wine, it's a still a good trend overall. Wine is the drink of of leisurely conservation, especially over a meal. That's a win for civilization. Do you agree?
